Sounds like hot spots. My lab used to get them a quick trip to the vet fixed it and advised us how to stop them.

It could be that she's allergic to something. Does she seem to scratch her sides a lot? Is it possible that she has fleas and is just scratching? I would call the vet and see what he suggests.
