While it would depend on where he or she is losing hair, the most likely cause is adrenal. Adrenal disease is very common in ferrets, unfortunately.
If it's just the tail, it could be something less serious... blackheads, for example. Sometimes the tail just gets clogged with ferret's body oils.
If a ferret has poor diet sometimes their coat is drier and tends to shed off easier.
Basically, if the hair loss is enough you can clearly see the skin, and it's not merely the tip of the tail, it's time to bring the ferret to the vet. Do so soon, as especially for male ferrets, adrenal is pretty deadly.
