If I have two dogs that live outside and they are losing there hair is it because of sun exposer?

I live with my mom and she doesn't want the dogs inside like I do. Their hair loss is mainly in the back where their tail is at. They do have fleas, I wash them every week since I heard if you wash them daily it drys out there skin and hair. Any suggestions?

Why haven't you treated the fleas? Fleas can suck a dog dry of blood and lead to much bigger problems than just itching and irritation. Imagine having a million bugs on you sucking your blood!

Also, if they have not been treated with an insect repellent, they will likely get heartworm, which is deadly, often even when caught early.

Washing them will not treat fleas nor hair loss. There is obviously a bigger problem here and if you are unwilling to treat this properly and take them to the vet, it probably would be better to find them a better home.

Sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear, but it sounds like your dogs are suffering.

It's probably a combination of the over bathing, and a flea allergy. You should get a good flea treatment from the vet, and help them out.

Fined them new homes.

You are not helping anything by the washing...they have fleas and thus have skin problems from being eaten alive by fleas...get the meds from the vet...and take them with you for the skin problem...the clean up their area with sevin from the nursery for plants...its the best pest control...and clean the water two or three times a day...for prevention of heart worm from drinking water with fly and mosquito eggs and larvae....

Hair loss could be alot of things. Fleas aren't good number one, the dog could be scratching like mad in the area rubbing the fur off, or it could be even allergic to the fleas. It could also have what is known as a "hot spot" which is where the dog is constantly "picking" at an area, a sore develops. It could also be mange if you notice any scabby areas. Try some topical flea/tick remover (be careful not to put any of this on the irritated skin) It will help but you really need to have your pooch seen by a vet to be on the safe side.

I have to agree with Volk131.

Sounds like your dogs are allergic to fleas, and are biting themselves, hence the hair lossJust bathing will not get rid of fleas. Get rid of the fleas,(fleas breed in bedding and in the dirt not on the dogs)And Frontline both dogs, now.

first more than a bath is needed. you need to use a good flea bath, plus preventatives. And the hair loss could be mange or chewing on it to itch themselves.

second they need medical care to make sure they are healthy.

There is lots of reasons why dogs loose their hair, but he most common one is that dogs coat changes with the seasons and they will loose more hair when its spring to early summer cause the hair is thinning out again. If you spread the hair and see their is little black grains you got a major flea problem, rather invest in some dip and dip the dogs, rub with your hand the dip around their ears and muzzle, that will temporaily sort the flea problem out, also clean their bedding and kennel and dump the left over dip where they always lay down. Another reason might be the shampoo that you are using so change it and only wash them every two or three weeks rather put flea powder on them if the fleas persists.

my dog does that too...its caused from fleas...they pull their hair out with their teeth. It's hard to keep fleas off dogs when they live outside especially when its really hot outside. buy some flea powder stuff thats what i do

TREAT THEM FOR FLEAS!

Washing them every week will only do HARM to them. Drying out their skin is NOT a way to get rid of fleas. You don't let them inside so the least you can do is treat them for fleas monthly. Stop bathing them so often and start doing it 3-4 times per year. The fact that you are bathing them too often could also be why they are losing fur.

They could be allergic to grasses or seed that is in the grasses out side .They could have mange or an allergy to fleas. My dog

lost all of her hair when she was a pup and the vet had done tests to check for mange but they came back negative .She went on antibiotics and they didnt help her so the vet told me to put her down.I moved house instead and now my dog has all her hair back.Just keep alook out for signs of both dogs getting sicker if so take to the vet.

First of all, do you have your dogs on any kind of parasite preventative? Like Revolution or Interceptor? Fleas live out side. You can wash them as much as you want, but if they aren't protected, the fleas will come back immediately. Second, where are they living outside that the fleas keep coming back? Doesn't sound like a very clean environment. Your dogs could be losing their hair from scratching the flea bites constantly, or there could be something else going on. Why don't you take them to the vet? And then check out their living arrangements.
