What for dog losing his hair he's old and losing his hair?

Dogs loose their hair naturally as they get older, however if you are seeing a dramatic increase in hair loss, it may be attributed to an imbalanced thyroid gland. The thyroid can become slowed down, impacting hair growth and shedding.

If you are feeding your dog a good premium dog kibble, try adding a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil per 10 pouns of body weight to his kibble. If the hair loss continues, take him to the vet and have a blood panel run on him. That will tell you what is wrong.

How old is your dog?

Is this hair loss more like excessive shedding, but some hair still remaining? Or bald patches forming in the dog's coat?

Is the dog biting and scratching?

Is the skin where the hair is leaving red or irritated?

Excessive shedding can be caused by many factors that would be difficult to determine without seeing the dog. Even the brand of dog food can cause excessive shedding.

Hairless areas forming could also be caused by a large number of reasons: skin irritations, disease, etc.

A quick trip to the vet. would be more beneficial than posting this question here.

However, if you go to your local Pet Depot, Petco, farmer's co-op, or pet store, they should sell some products to fight something many people call "mange." This may work.

Good luck.

Yes, Dogs loose hair as they grow older. Somethings may accelerate the process, like alergies. A long time ago I was training a dog for a owner that had another one. It was a Doberman and about 11 years old. I suggested the Owner try Skin So Soft from Avon. (No I'm not a dealer). I had used it on dogs for repellent from fleas and ticks. I have seen hair growth in the past and I told the Owner, I didn't know if it would work on older dogs. Well believe it or not, by the time I finished training her dog 6 weeks later. The Doberman hair grew about a half a inch. Now that was spectacular seeing how there was no hair on her rump. So it's a idea. Good Luck.
