Many possibilities: ringworm (although has 'worm' in the name, is not a worm, is a fungus), mites, infection, fleas, endocrine or behavioral disorder.

Best way to find out is to take your cat to the vet especially if ringworm is a possibility because it is zoonotic (meaning YOU can get ringworm from your cat).

Ringworm or mange if you see any sort of scabbing, sores or redness possibly.

Allergies if he is scratching a lot and chewing in those areas, but the skin looks normal. Try changing the cat's food.

I usually call my vet if I notice cats losing hair. They know the right questions to ask to determine if it is something to worry about.

My cat is also losing big clumps of hair. I had her to two vets and got two possible causes. One said it might be an allergy or fleas. I can't see any fleas and she was never allergic before. However I got her some hypoallergenic food sold at the vet shop, and that seemed to make her at least feel better.

The other vet said it could be stress or something upsetting her. He gave her some nerve pills that half knocked her out but it worked for a long time.

Now she has arthritis bad and she is pulling out more big clumps of fur on the part of her hip that is sore. When I give her syn-flex and dgp for arthritis she is some better.

So I think the answer is more than one thing can be the cause of pulling out hair.

My sisters cat had the same problem and it was ringworm. You need to take the cat to the vet so the vet can diagnose it and give the appropriate medication.
